Mad for Malachite.

IfWith St. Patrick’s Day behind us and a green green spring (and environmental attitude) ahead, I’m mad for all things green. Especially the earthy but glamourous look of the mineral stone malachite. There is a great history behind this unique mineral. In Greek mythology, the throne of Demeter, goddess of grain and harvest, was fashioned from malachite and adorned with golden pigs and ears of barley (maybe she liked pork chops and beer for dinner?). Up until about 1800, Malachite was used as a mineral pigment in green paints.

And today, the rock band Green Day used malachite in the lyrics of their song 2000 Light Years Away, as a metaphor to lead singer and songwriter Billie Joe Armstrong’s green eyes. My interest however lies mostly in it’s as a lifestyle accent in jewelry and home decor pieces.

To Me: Less Shabby. More Chic.

Most of us are aware that one of the  biggest trends in home decor is the Hollywood Regency style. Looks made famous by iconic design stars such as Dorothy Draper, Kelly Wearstler, Jonathan Adler among many others encompass this popular style associated with glitz, glamour and celebrity of the mid-century era. The more fashionable bamboo furniture pieces by classic Thomasville, Henry Link, Dixie and even newer top shelf WS Home have made their way into eclectic homes across the world. I’ve been looking for a new dresser and just this afternoon scored a painted white Henry Link one off of Craigslist. I hope we make great partners as I stuff it full of a soon-to-be-pared down collection of tees, shorts, and LuLuLemon. =) When it’s time to make friends with another color, size, or style, I’m sure there will be plenty of new homeowners ready to recycle this simple and pretty piece.

Clicking beyond Craigslist.

You know I love to frequesnt the Style, Home, and Garden sections of the big city newspapers. I’m also trying to off-load some furniture that I currently own. Voila. A recent article in New York Times Home & Garden section, called “Clicking Beyond Craigslist”, presents us with ideas for getting rid of the good stuff – more like the larger pricier stuff. Besides eBay.com, Craigslist.com, and a slew off other auction sites, Steven Milioti explains other ways to get rid of and forget.

Portero.com. Also called the authenticated luxury market for housewares, jewelry and fashion, this avenue for buying and selling to the world is pretty and looks more like a popular online retailer. You can buy and sell here. And its easy on the eyes.

Kijiji.com. Owned by eBay, this colorful and quality website, meaning ‘village’ in Swahili, is a classified advertising site. It allows sellers reach out to buyers near them to keep shipping costs low.

Narts.org. Check out this online portal for the National Association of Resale and Thrift Shops to find the closest drop-off locations in your area.

Isa-ppraiers.org. Before you get chump change for that cherished and rare chest, check out the International Society of Appraisers to make sure you get the true appraised value of your prized furniture possession.

Now clean out those closets and make some moola for that summer vacation. Or like me, to buy more stuff to make my indoor life pretty.

Just a Thought.
