Scratch Pad.

Oh crap!! I made it three days without a single smidgen of a line, bump or bruise on my new 32GB black iPhone 4… that is until yesterday. When my diamond earring met it for the first time.

Diamond earrings will scratch the iPhone 4 screen. So get a static-cling film of you love your precious baubles.

Chuck Close Up.

Starting this Saturday, the Corcoran Gallery of Art will host a special exhibition of portraiture works from famed Chuck Close. Close experimented with innovative techniques that push the limits in painting. Entitled Chuck Close Prints: Process and Collaboration, the exhibit which runs through September 12th, will feature more than 100 of his finished works will be on display to convey to visitors just how cool and deep a portrait can be.

The Corcoran web site explains, “When making a print, Close and his collaborators complete every stage of their process —from translating an image onto a matrix, to carving wood blocks, etching plates, and applying multiple layers of color—by hand. The mammoth scale and technical complexity of many of his portraits, combined with this time-consuming process, often means that a single print may take years to complete.”

Wow.

Orange Lonny-Pop.

I have become smitten with Lonny Mag. In the recent issue, incredible designer and founder of Pieces Atlanta, Lee Kleinhelter, is featured in a beautiful article with mouth-watering pictures of a condo she redesigned in her own building with a rustic edge and modern sophistication. I’m drawn to the consistent use of whites, creams, browns and juicy orange. Lee recently thanked me for a post on one of her goods sold through her online store (love it!).

Kleinhelter sees lighting as just as important as a sofa.If she can’t find the right one, she creates one herself with found objects. Who’s got talent? =)

Lee shares that most of her own furnishings are purchased at flea markets and are mostly previously owned goods that are restored to her liking.

Black Light.

I’ve always been drawn to lighting fixtures that feature black materials. Like a black shade in a dimmed library or dining room, it creates a mood that can be both relaxing and somewhat sultry. Black shades block the sideways light and allow the light to permeate only the open ends, adding a warm glow and creating interesting shapes and ray’s across a room, wall or side table. I have a floor lamp in my living room with a dark drum shade that flanks the floor to ceiling fireplace wall and highlights an intimate corner. Voila!

A Little Inspiration.

I heard this inspirational quote at my yoga class this afternoon. It’s a great thought for the day!

Scorching and Standing in Line in the City.

We are having a heat wave in Washington, DC this week. Every year it comes around once, twice, three times over the summer and this week is our introductory period. We’ve already broken a record for the month of June and looking at the rest of the week, might break our own record a few more times. Too bad I’m standing in line this Thursday morning at the Clarendon Apple store with the rest of the iPhone junkies for the new iPhone 4. Better bring a lots of water, my iPhone 3GS with a loaded battery, and a backpack of patience. It’s supposed to be 99 degrees! Pant pant. Having waited in the long lines for past iPhone launches on fairly hot mornings and afternoons, this Thursday is most likely not going to be that much different… except for the fact that there were the most reservations and inquiries for this newer version phone… have a feeling this could be an all day affair. On the hottest day of the year. But I’ll have a new gadget to tinker with on Friday. =)

Ya-HOT Show.

I’m stuck on yachts this week. Not that I’m a boating junkie, but I have been cruising on the water since I was a wee lass. =)  My guy and I are planning a trip to Europe this Fall and would love to stop over in Monaco. Anyone have any good itineraries for me? If I can swing it, I would be there during the end of September for the Monaco Yacht Show. Or shall I say, I HAVE to be there! Check out the website for this grand event! Wow wow WOW! Hot hot HOT!

Casino Royale.

The marinas in Washington Channel are booming with mega yachts. On our way out of Gangplank Marina, we cruised on our 39′ Rinker past this AMAZING 16o’ Christiansen yacht called Casino Royale.  A collaboration between builder Christensen and owner/aficionado John Staluppi, the Casino Royale is an example of some of the world’s quickest and most impressive yachts afloat. It is the largest and most spacious Millennium Edition yacht to date, as evidenced by her sheer beauty from the water in our “dinghy” below the decks. After reading up on this private vessel, I learned that the interiors were designed by interior design firm Carol Williamson & Associates. In the photo slide show on Casino Royale’s own personal website, it’s evident that he 007 theme is celebrated throughout, from Bond girl silhouettes in etched glass panels that clad the spiral staircase to Vesper Lynd look-alike statues watching over the main saloon and aft entrance. All stone on board (and lots of it!) was precision designed and executed by stone master Jeff Homchick.

And not to forget about The Fighting Irish, a 144′ beauty also tied up against the long docks of the Washington Channel. I had the opportunity to share the restaurant deck with the owner during a late Sunday dinner last month at Cantina Marina (love that place after a long day on the water and they allow dogs!). Amy Halffman designed the interiors (which I have not seen) and it’s also a visual treat for any city dweller eager to get a glimpse of life beyond the Delaware beaches – to a life of luxury on the water, in the world’s most discreet bays and among the rich and famous. Anchor’s away!

Happy Child.

My sister took her family of four to the beach recently and as expected, her two-year old toddler was in heaven with the ocean and the sand. She’s such a happy and joyous being. And this smiling photo of her in her polka dot red hat and ruffled black swim suit just makes my day.

Just a Thought.
