High Tea.

It’s time to celebrate the start of summer this weekend with smokey BBQ’s, garden parties, sunset weddings and lots of pool time. I’ve got a busy weekend that includes a wee bit of celebrating outdoors (c’mon Mother Nature….bring us some sun!). I found this Sweet Tea with Vodka and Lemonade recipe in Bon Appetit. It looks delish and might be the perfect southern cocktail to offer alongside that Prosecco and Corona Light (with lime of course)! Who’s ready for another round?

Ingredients

2 large tea bags for iced tea
1/2 cup boiling water
8 fresh mint sprigs
4 cups lemonade made from frozen concentrate
1/2 cup vodka
Ice cubes
8 lemon slices

Directions

  1. Place tea bags in medium bowl. Add 1/2 cup boiling water. Let steep 4 minutes. Discard tea bags.
  2. Place mint sprigs in large pitcher; mash with muddler or handle of wooden spoon until slightly bruised. Pour in tea, lemonade, and vodka. Can be made 1 day ahead. Cover and chill.
  3. Fill 8 highball glasses with ice. Divide sweet tea among glasses. Garnish with lemon slices.

Pattern Me: Chain Gang

Give me Chevron, give me Greek Key, Give Me Quadrefoil… and give me link Chain. I love this classic pattern. It’s infiltrated the home decor market for years. And with the summer weather and days lounging on the motor boat, I think it’s about time to take a peek at some goods that are all chained up.

Molo Takes on Innovation Solo.

You have to watch these time-lapse videos of Molo Design putting together their exhibit at Salon di Milano. Award-winning Molo Design + Studio has been sweeping kudos across the globe at exhibitions here in the States, Milan and Paris. These expanding blocks and walls actually serve as strong seating, tables, sculpture, and walls! It’s like super size paper dolls! A non-woven polyethylene material, trade name Tyvek©, is UV and water-resistant and can expand and contract to freely shape furniture or more intimate spaces within larger open areas. I would love to get my hands on one of their softblock modular systems. Although these products are being snatched for commercial and interior design applications, the child in me finds these expanding blocks and walls as a perfect medium for an adult fort. =) Goodbye dining chairs, bed sheets, and rubber bands. Hello Molo.

Breakfast for Champions.

I’m all about breakfast AND grilling. Well, you can imagine how I rejoiced when I read about Sunset Magazine perfect combination: French Toast Kebabs. Here’s the recipe for a sweet breakfast outdoors:

  1. Take 12 wooden skewers (10 to 12 in.) in water for 20 minutes; drain
  2. Cut day-old pain au levain into 1-in. chunks, including some crust on each, to make 2 qts.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk 3/4 cup wholemilk, 4 large eggs, and 1 tsp. vanilla extract to blend.
  4. Mix in bread to coat; thread onto skewers.
  5. Grill, covered, on a well-oiled cooking grate over medium heat (about 350°) until browned, turning once, 3 to 4 minutes.
  6. Serve with maple or berry syrup and melted butter and dust with powdered sugar if you like.
  7. Serves with Mimosas on the patio and watch the sun rise.

Make it better with day-old bread, with some crust and be sure to soak the skewers!

    House Calls.

Thank you to the Washington Post for making me the guest designer for this week’s House Calls!

This Silver Spring, Maryland homeowner sought the WP to help create a cafe style area for their kitchen that also once served as a dining space. Prior to reaching out to WP, they added new checkerboard flooring, wall paint, lighting, and a tiled window ledge surface (to be used for a collection of indoor plants). They like the existing white cabinets, eucalyptus green and terra-cotta colors in the flooring, paint and brick wall and have an appreciation for mosaics.

With a budget in place from the homeowner and a list of things the homeowners liked, needed, or preferred, I created a room that is comfortable, open, easy to navigate, inviting, energizing, and organized. It was important to the homeowner that it was not too modern and worked alongside their more transitional preference for design. Low furnishings allows them to retain those pretty views to the outside. The adjustable and durable seating gives them room to add more if required.  An organized sideboard and new countertops calms the eye and hides bin storage. Window treatments, accent pillows and area rug soften the solid and cool surfaces. While ceiling lighting and a lamp add a pleasing glow to the room.

STORYBOARD: Suggested items for the space.

The sketch artist at the Post did a nice job at trying to illustrate my vision for the space. Some things are slightly skewed but a rendering does not replace a final photograph of a finished product. See the WP results below (the red dots are anchors for further descriptions of the items used in the rendering (see storyboard above or see the online House Calls here).

    Major Love for Milo.

I have to have this set of six chrome dining chairs by Milo Baughman. They are newly reupholstered in a colorful ribbon pattern raised velvet. There is no doubt these handsome and festive chairs would make my dining room the heart of the house (in my next home that has a dining room that could fit these beauties). Imagine what impact the space would have nestled next to this vintage teal blue sideboard! Bond & Bowery, do you take charge cards? Anyone know what upholstery fabric that is?
