Lucky Dutch.

I wish I has this kind of luck. Can you imagine stumbling upon a valuable peice like this newly unearthed Van Gogh?

The Associated Press reports this —

“A newly authenticated Van Gogh has gone on display 35 years after a discredited art collector bought it in Paris, convinced it was painted by the famed Dutch master but never able to prove it. Louis van Tilborgh, curator of research at the Van Gogh Museum inAmsterdam, said “Le Blute-Fin Mill” was painted in 1886. He said its large human figures are unusual for a Van Gogh landscape but it has his typically bright colors. It was bought in 1974 by Dirk Hannema, who was known as a brilliant museum curator but a fool when buying for his own collection. When he died in 1984 he claimed to have seven Vermeers, several Van Goghs and a few Rembrandts. He was right only about this one.

Setting The Bar… Table.

If you receive eNewsletters from Powell and Bonnell, you would have seen their newly released products and yet again, are impressed with their beautiful line of gorgeous furniture and accessories. Like this Piazza Bar Table. I love it. It’s quite a statement in itself, so I would nestle it up against a focal wall, under a large piece of wall art or mirror. It deserves a large room with high ceilings, be it a modern loft or an updated Tuscan retreat. The finger planed and laminated antique wood top adds a low-key rustic flair while the screw head detailed polished legs nod towards a more industrial tone. It’s height is bit up there at 42″ (perfect for a home bar) although custom sizes area available. I’m adding this fav to my list of other P&B sweethearts — The Sentinel Floor Lamp, Concentric Wall Mirror, and the Highland Console.

Stairway to Storage.

I thought this wall shelving unit was kinda cool. The Ladder Bookcase stores books and prized possessions with a relatively small footprint. Its made with premium solid wood (a few varieties available) and rests beautifully against any vertical wall. Not sure it’s made for climbing – which I am sure at least one guest will attempt to do. Where does this lead to?

Sub Culture + Art = G40: The Summit.

Coming to Arlington, Virgnia in March is the G40: The Summit, a dynamic contemporary art exhibition featuring curated works from from over 500 artists around the world.  Typically unheard of in this sweet ‘upburb’ of Washington DC, G-40: The Summit will be a culmination of ideas and processes, brought together and highlighted by region and style, creating, for the first time, a full cross examination of the New Brow genre. Over 75,000 sq. ft. of exhibition space with 4 floors of art will represent different centers of the New Brow movement: The DC, New York, and California metro areas. Moving through the exhibition space, visitors will be able to connect the dots of how the different sub-cultures and environs affect the art.

Art Whino

Brought to us by Art Whino, a DC based art gallery whose mission is to bring together the freshest and rawest talent from around the world, this art event begins March 3rd and runs for the entire month. Go see it for yourself at 223 23rd St. Arlington, VA 22202.

Jacuzzi Jewelry.

After thousands of showers and baths, this is one home design element I would have never thought of. These Designer Drains are interesting to look at when watching your hair and soap scraps float hurriedly counter clockwise to the end of the spa tub or shower. Oops…gone. But look at that fancy drain cap!

Wall Decor En Plein Air.

The grass is finally coming up for air! I can see green! Snow has been melting all day under our sunny blue sky here in Washington DC and looks like Spring might eventually show its face after all. I am so eager for the days when I can dress up my small urban concrete patio. Last weekend I strolled through Ikea and found that their outdoor products will debut in stores around the first week of March. The mammoth retail warehouse is one of my go-to’s come April for an interesting and stylish selection of outdoor garden and patio furniture and decor. So too will be Susan Bradley. Her laser cut metal Outdoor Wallpaper is an award-winning metal product that reinterprets a domestic item for outdoor spaces. It adds a casual elegance as a decorative feature, a plant trellis, or as a screen from for privacy.

Deep vs. Shallow Pockets.

It’s been a while since I did a blog post on high versus low – two home decor items with the same look and feel but totally different price. This time around, I found a table that works in a multitude of stylish settings. Perfect as an end table,  pull up liquor bar, breakfast server, or small entry console, any of the following two decorative white folding tray tables with mirrored tray tops and fancy fretwork will deliver many years of multipurpose use!

Go for this one if you have shallow pockets or tend to change up your interior design every now and then. The Country Living Antique Finish Wood Tray Side Table from Kmart is only $69 and a perfect little table to brighten up any room. I already see it topped with fresh peonies come early summer (because I can afford them after purchasing this lower priced option)! The dimensions are 28″L x 15.25″D x 27″H.

However, certain manufacturers offer really well crafted pieces that demand a higher price point. Deeper pockets might find beauty in this White Tray Table from Global Views that I found on Inside Avenue. At $835, it is slightly larger and has a thinner frame and lighter look but in the end, its almost exactly the same as the lower price version. The dimensions are 26″L x 21″D x 33.25″H.
